Nevado del Chañi (The snow-capped Chañi Mountain via León)

The snow-capped mountain of Chañi, at 5896 meters above sea level, is located in the province of Jujuy. Its ascent is realized along the route that leaves the village of León.

This mountain forms a part of a long mountain range that gives it is name and divides the provinces Jujuy and Salta.

The trek is realized along an Incan trail and an an Aboriginal community called “Ovejería”. During the ascent you can enjoy the beautiful landscape as well as the sight of llamas and condors that are characteristic of the area.




Duration: 7 days

Departure and arrival from San Salvador de Jujuy

Day 1: San Salvador de Jujuy - León- Encrucijada (cross road)– Santos Family

Day 2: Santos Family -  Ovejería

Day 3: Acclimatization in Ovejería

Day 4: Ovejería – Militar Refuge

Day 5: Militar Refuge - Summit- Militar Refuge

Day 6: Militar Refuge - Lozano

Day 7: Lozano - San Salvador de Jujuy

Day 1: San Salvador de Jujuy - Leon- Encrucijada - Familia Santos

After leaving San Salvador de Jujuy we will pass through the historic village of León and go deep into the riverbed that shares its name along a path for cars until arriving at La Encrucijada (the crossing of the Leon River and Molina River).

We will leave the vehicle there and begin our ascent along the Inca trail. After four to five hours we will arrive at the home of the Santos family where we will stay the night near what used to be a small chapel.

Day 2: Santos Family - OvejerIa

We will continue our ascent along the Inca trails following the slope of the Cerro Potrerillos, or in English “pasture hill.”

After crossing the pasture and river a few times, we will reach the indigenous Overjería community, which is 3,500 meters above sea level. We will spend the next night near the town’s small chapel in what was formerly a boarding school. 


Day 3: Acclimatization in OvejerIa

Day of rest and acclimatization sharing stories about the Chañi and its surroundings with the village’s residents. 



Day 4: OvejerIa – Militar Refuge 

After seven hours of hiking we will arrive at the military shelter that will serve as our base camp at 4500 meters above sea level.

During the trek we will enjoy a beautiful landscapes, including the Lagoon of Chañi. 



Day 5: Refuge – Summit – Refuge 

Day of the summit!

This is the most demanding day of the hike, reaching the summit (at 5896 meters above sea level) at midday and then ascending to the refuge where we will spend the night.



Day 6: Refuge – Lozano

From the refuge we will descend to the crossroads where a vehicle will be waiting to bring us to the comfortable lodge in Lozano, where we will spend the night and recuperate our energy while enjoying an abundant dinner and a delicious breakfast. 


Day 7: Lozano- San Salvador de Jujuy

The next day when we are well rested we will enjoy our breakfast and a vehicle will pick us up in Lozano and drop us off in San Salvador de Jujuy.
